Legends of the Grandmaster

The moment they ask us to choose between two different paths, the implicit message is that we can only follow one. -Daniele Bolelli, On The Warrior’s Path

I got this e-mail from Lamont this morning:

"Kitsune, you did really good last night. I was very impressed by how you turned it up. And that takedown was awesome!!"

Vexed I am at missing Saturday competition training- the last Saturday comp training before the Revolution. Despite taking a sleeping pill at 10pm, another at midnight, and a THIRD at 2am, I was still wall-eyed at 6am. I am so **over** this insomnia crapola.

RS is in town. I was just informed of this yesterday. Unfortunately most of my weekend was already booked with work- but I saw him today and will see him again tomorrow (hoping I can still get to Kung Fu afterward, but if I have to skip it, I will).

I talked to CC and RS for about two hours, and TS for another FOUR. some of it was chitchat (CC and RS seem inordinately interested in mining gossip about my nonexistant love life, for some odd reason), some of it was dirt about politics within the order (always good to know, so as to try to avoid stepping on land mines... yet sometimes a bit TMI), some of it was about my training (more discussion about learning styles; I really want to delve more deeply into that), some of it was about the local Kung Fu group.

SK would love the chance to train with RS- as well as the chance to discuss with him some of the challenges he's dealing with re: teaching the class. RS doesn't want to deal with anyone from DD's gang (besides me and JoE, whom he consider his students). I spent some time (and expect to spend more tomorrow) trying to grease the wheels enough for RS to at least consider seeing SK.

TS agrees with me that I likely have some undiagnosed ADD going on, and that this is probably playing a role in the difficulties I am having with training. She also thinks that I might benefit from some treatment for depression. Since I currently have no health insurance, seeing a doctor for either issue (or for the insomnia, which is surely related) is not an option at this time- but things to keep in mind.

Somehow, my age came up again....When CC heard how old I was, he exclaimed, "NO SHIT??!!" right in front of his three-year-old son- who immediately began repeating the ejaculation loudly and gleefully to the entire Thai restaurant.

Every time I see RS, I wish he would move back here- or that I could travel more easily- so that I could see more of him.

Great new (to me) legend that TS told me about RS:

RS was teaching a seminar to some 25-odd students. The students were to learn a form from one of the animal styles, but they needed to choose what they wanted to work on: Crane, Tiger, Mantis, Snake, or Dragon. The students couldn't come to consensus. RS said, "Everyone who wants to work on Crane, line up here." and so on, till there were 5 lines. The students assumed that they were voting, and the seminar would focus on a form from whichever style had the longest line. Instead, RS went to line 1 and taught the students in that line the opening sequence of a Crane form. Then, while they repped that, RS went to line 2 and taught those students the opening sequence of a Tiger form. By the time he got back to line 1, those students were ready for the next move in the form. In this fashion, RS taught five different groups of students five different forms in one seminar- and later, the students could teach each other.

That is why he is cool.
